SM West Retirement - Don Perkins

Retirement of SMSD #512 Athletic Director

Congratulations to Don Perkins who will be retiring from SM West as only their second Athletic Director in the history of the school.

Don Perkins took over for retiring Harvey "Nip" Shepard at the conclusion of the 2005-06 school year.

Don Perkins came to SM West from Olathe South where he opened the school in 1981 and led the Falcons Baseball program from its inception. These days his son Josh Perkins now leads the Falcons Baseball team.

Prior to opening Olathe South in 1981, Don was at Sante Fe Middle School in the early 1970's. By 1976, he came on staff to join the Olathe Eagles and Bud Wheeler's Football staff. Coach Wheeler himself was at that time already building a Coaching tree of future Head Coaches that find their own former Student-athletes now in the High School teaching/coaching ranks within the Johnson County area and more.

In his time at SM West, the Vikings have won 6A Football, and Woman's Soccer State Titles under Tim Callaghan, and alumni/W Soccer Coach Sarah Gonzalez

Congrats to Don Perkins again on a great career in Education, and as Athletic Director. The SMSD #512 and all of the Sunflower League will be missed with your contributions and time invested in giving back to the student-athletes of many generations.

To our viewers across the state who are in the education field, if you are interested in becoming SM West Athletic Director, you can apply at: www.smsd.org
