Sunflower Post Season 2015

The 2015 season is now complete after this Saturdays Final of Blue Valley vs Derby.

Brandon Clark’s Derby Panthers claimed their second 6A State Title in three seasons, and won in model fashion despite freezing conditions, and an awful situation for athletes trying to maintain any quality footing.

Congrats to the Blue Valley Tigers on a great season, and representing the 6A East. They finished the year at 10-3 Overall.

In the days, and weeks to come more the Sunflower League will release their 1st, 2nd, and Honorable Mention teams, among many other honors for our 12 High Schools.
* Look for Thomas (Tommy) A. Simone Award - Sunflower nominations
* Kansas Shrine Bowl - Sunflower nominations
* KS vs MO All-Star game - Sunflower nominations
* Any additional honors, and we'll be be corresponding with others around the State, here locally, and publications covering our Sunflower 12
* If you do know of an Honor to the Team, or Student-athlete, or Coaches, don't hesitate to message us, and we will post it soon as we can

Rising to the challenge in the near future will also be the Gardner-Edgerton Trailblazers. G-E and Olathe West will be #13 and #14 schools now part of the current 12 team league.

There is already  plenty of talk, as to what will or will not happen come the 2018 Varsity Football season. For no, weather it is good or bad, or we like it or do not, the #SFLfball will continue to be logged as a single table/standings. Should any news break on how everything plays out, you will be the first to know.

SFL standings will continue to matter, but there will be a slight change that will be posted in weeks one (1) through (8) in the 2016 season. A SFL League Champion, or Champion(s) see the 2010 season, will continue as scheduled to be crowned, even as all teams will see as many as six (6) league games, while some will play seven (7) with one, or as many as two non-conference teams during the 2016 and 2017 schedules.

Rogers Heritage AR War Eagles are not on any future Sunflower team schedule at this time.

With the addition of GET, our local counterparts the EKL will be down to nine (9) teams/schools

Game Preview

Blue Valley Tigers
How they got there? Below is a run down of both Eric Driskell, and Brandon Clark with both Varsity schedules and records entering Saturday's game!

First off, congrats to the Blue Valley Tigers of Stilwell, KS on their first 6A State Football Finals appearance. All prior State Titles won by the Tigers have all been in the 5A Class. The two most recent came in 2010, and 2013, also led by alumni Eric Driskell.

This goes without saying, the foundations of Tiger Football legend to Steve Rampy leading the way for 25 years set the standard for the EKL. The floodgates did open up for change last Friday night, again as the Olathe North Eagles were held back a third straight season to make it to the 6A State Final.

Head Coach Eric Driskell enters the 6A State Final with an overall record of
58W-13L in 73 games coached
Playoffs: 16-3 in 19 games coached
794 W%
State Titles in 2010 and 2013.

Derby Panthers

Derby's Brandon Clark enters the 6A State Final, returning after a 2013 win over SM East two years ago at Topeka. His Derby tenure begins in 2008 to 2015 (8 seasons) with an overall record of:

73W-21L in 94 games coached
Playoffs: 16-6 in 22 games coached
754 W%
State Title in 2013 defeating SFL SM East (11-2)

Sunflower Weekend Highlights

Blue Valley West and its Sunflower Connection

Scott Wright, the one and only Head Coach ever of the Blue Valley West Football Jaguars has stepped down after a great 15 year run.

Prior to beginning at BV West, Scott Wright was a long time Blue Valley Tigers AC for Steve Rampy. Scott Wright’s start with High School Football began as a SM South Football Raider under legendary Head Coach John Davis.

In the 15 seasons that the Jaguars have been in existence, the program won its first and only State Championship seven seasons in to Wright’s tenure. The 2007 Jaguars, accomplished a 13-0 season and became EKL Champions that year. QB Ryan Kopp led the Jaguars, was later named to the school’s first ever Hall of Fame - 2012 (HOF) Sports Class including: the Kansas City Wizards/Sporting KC Matt Besler, Travis Helgeson, and Elizabeth Valenti.

AD Cindy Roach is a former SMNW Cougars Women's Basketball Coach & AD prior to opening BVW.

Closing out his tenure, Scott Wright leaves the program with a record of 81W-71L, 132 GC, 532W%

Sunflower welcomes the Gardner-Edgerton Trailblazers in 2017

Friday 11-20-15, the G-E Trailblazers were granted admission in to the Sunflower League.

G-E will become the 13th member in 2017, prior to the opening of Olathe West as a Varsity Football program in 2018.

The journey to the Sunflower League for the G-E Trailblazers, began with a long time run within the Frontier League. Through many years and many coaching changes over the Trailblazers rarely, if ever found themselves close to sniffing a trip the playoffs.

After 19 years, legendary Salina Central Mustangs Coach Marvin Diener, retires after a final and 5th State Championship overall with a 13-0 season. With a record of 170-43, the G-E-T found themselves in the hands of Marvin Diener and the Frontier League in 2006, who will in time transform this lowly program in to a Midwestern/regional powerhouse Football program in southern Johnson County.

At the conclusion of the 2009-2010 school year, the Trailblazers were accepted in to the EKL for the 2010-2011 season. For the next seven seasons (prior to the 2017-2018 school year) the GET will have played seven seasons with the EKL. The 2010 Trailblazers won the EKL in their 2010 season.

As a member of the Sunflower League, the G-E will be on Varsity status for all programs as the future school year unfolds. Olathe West will become the 14th member of the Sunflower as a Varsity Football program in the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Entering the 2016 and Final EKL season, the Trailblazers are 35-27 in the EKL.

G-E Alumni ties to the Royals
·         QB Bubba Starling drafted by the KC Royals in 2011 (Originally signed on to play Football with the Nebraska Cornhuskers)
·         Currently in Royals Farm System with NW Arkansas Naturals and a
Royals Top 30 Prospect

Once this all falls in to place prior to the end of this decade, there will continue to be changes as the league evolves.

Stay tuned!

Game Previews

Blue Valley (9-2) vs Olathe North (10-1) @ Blue Valley

Entering Week-12, these two storied programs meet again. Between the two Football teams, 14 6A & 5A State Titles are held. In 2014, these two met at ODAC with the Eagles coming away with the Sectional championship after beating the Tigers 27-14, only to lose to the eventual 2014 State Champions, the SM East Lancers.

The tides have turned in 2015. The Lancers and Chesty Lions are eliminated and the road has been paved for the Tigers and Eagles to move on to the East 6A Sub-State Final. With both programs in full throttle mode going into Friday night, motivation will be high from both squads.

Keep one thing in mind. Much like ODAC is impossible for any Sunflower League school to win at on the road, playing at Blue Valley High Stadium is no easy task for a local EKL opponent, much less that of a rare Sunflower team to make a trip in to the Tiger Den.

These two programs are no stranger to each other. In their EKL days before joining the Sunflower, the Eagles finished 8-2 overall vs the Tigers.

Since 2004, the Tigers and Eagles have met six times: 04-05-08-09-14 and now 15. The Eagles lead the playoff series 3 games to 2, with Wins coming in 2009 and 2014. Once again, these two will meet, and Olathe North has changed Head Coaches four different times (also facing Blue Valley) while Steve Rampy retired to Pitt State, and alumnae Eric Driskell took over the reigns at Blue Valley.

State Titles:
Blue Valley (6) 1991 - 1998 - 2003 - 2006 - 2010 - 2013
Olathe North (8) 1996 - 1997 - 1998 - 2000 - 2001 - 2002 - 2003 - 2009

Free State (8-3) vs Derby (10-1) @ Derby

There is a first for everything. This Sub-State game marks a return for Free State from 2014, minus the SaltHawks who stopped a hot Firebirds team in its tracks last season.

While Derby is no stranger to Sunflower opponents of the past after facing Olathe North and SM East in State Final games, the Firebirds will need to play a near flawless game against the talented Derby Panthers who are led by Jr. QB Brady Rust.  Rust has run for 423 yards and 6 TD's while throwing for 351 yards and 4 TD's in the playoffs alone.

This will be the first time these two teams meet. The Derby Panthers travel well everywhere they go, so it would be great to see Free State do the same in a hostile environment and pressure a talented Derby team. Playing away from home will be a tough task to take on. One of the biggest wins on the season was a win at home vs Hutch that ended in a 49-14 finish.

For our Mill Valley readers, it should also be noted that Derby Head Coach Brandon Clark is the cousin of Mill Valley Jaguars Football Coach Joel Applebee.

Changes to Olathe South Football Program for 2016

Per sources from within the Olathe #233 School District, Olathe South has accepted the resignation of Football Coach Jeff Gourley.

Coach Jeff Gourley was named the fourth Head Coach in Falcons history in 2008. Prior to succeeding current Leavenworth Pioneers Head Coach Mark Littrell, Jeff Gourley spent eight (8) seasons with the Belton Pirates with a record of 45-41 in the Suburban League from 2000 to 2007. He also had stops with KC-Southwest Indians from 1989 to 1995 in the old Interscholastic League with a record of 48-22 and with the Sherwood Marksmen from 1986 to 1988 with a record of 14-24.

During Jeff Gourley’s eight (8) seasons at Olathe South, the Falcons won the 2011 6A State Title defeating Wichita Heights 41-37. That season, the Falcons ended a three game losing streak at the State Finals. Leading that team was Braden Smith, who has gone on to NCAA Division 1 Football.

His resume with the Falcons includes a 5-2 record in the 6A playoffs, and a 30-21 record vs Sunflower opponents from 2008 to 2015. Jeff Gourley is 146-117, with a playoff record of 7-6 in 13 games.

Jeff Gourley exits the Sunflower League ranked 22nd all-time, with a record of 44-35, 79 GC, 556 W% and surpassed former SM Northwest Cougar Head Coach Tony Severino by one win to achieve this mark.

Athletic Director Clint Albers has started an immediate search for his successor.

Game Preview

Lawrence vs Blue Valley (@Lawrence)
In a rare match up the Chesty Lions find themselves facing the Blue Valley Tigers of Stilwell. Both teams historically have done great at the 5 and 6A playoff levels via Bill Freeman, Dick Purdy and Dirk Wedd (Lawrence) to the Tigers own Steve Rampy, and alumni Eric Driskell. Of the two, both have incredible student-athletes ready to take each other on.

For the Tigers, stepping up big on defense will be a key point in stopping Chesty Lions RB JD Woods who leads the Sunflower in Touchdowns. They will also need to pressure QB Clothier often as possible to distrupt this great Chesty Lions offense.

Blue Valley leads the series 1-0, last played in 2008 Round 1 game - Won 42-23

Olathe North vs SM East (@ ODAC)
In another monumental matchup, this time not at the Sub-State Final, the Eagles and Lancers once again face off in an epic battle on the gridiron. This season’s game however, will take place at ODAC, unlike SM North Stadium the previous two seasons.

The Lancers will feature QB Luke Kaiser, and a powerful offense that is no stranger to the Eagles from a season prior. Last season’s double-overtime game will feature Back Wyatt Edmisten, and multiple different attacking options for Head Coach Dustin Delaney. On the opposing sideline, you will see Vinnie Shabazz featured in Head Coach Chris McCartney’s offense. Although these teams are no stranger to each other in recent playoff seasons this will be a huge game for the both programs.

One would think, that the start of this game could again be 0 to 0 at the end of the first quarter but only time will tell. Both will do their best to continue to take care of the ball, and strong defense to contain each other’s strengths.

Will we see another double-OT game?! Time will only tell.

The Eagles lead the series all-time at 16-6, below is an up to date breakdown.
EKL – 2-2
SFL – 4-14
SFL Playoffs – Eagles 3W-2L
Thank you in advance to 8TimeStateChamps – I do have everything up to date.

Wichita Northwest vs Free State (@ Free State)
Of all 12 Sunflower League Football programs, this is the first ever meeting for the W-NW Grizzlies to take on the Free State Firebirds.

In a great run of the western side of the state, the Grizzlies have been in the playoffs since the 2008 season, and again eight straight seasons with quality opponents each time. This Friday night, going on the road at Free State will be no easy task as the Grizzlies will battle QB Bryce Torneden, and other forces within the Firebirds scoring arsenal. It will take a lot to end a seven (7) game winning streak for the Grizzlies to make a dent in the Firebirds defense.

Derby vs Junction City (@ Junction City)
JC big win over Hutch (finishing at 6-4) while the Blue Jays are looking to go 11-0… JC has done well dominating its Centennial League counterparts and advancing while the Topeka Trojans went home early against a talented Derby Panthers. The Panthers themselves, are not far removed from a great run to the 2013 6A State Title run, with a win over the SM East Lancers.

Since 2010, the JC Blue Jays have gone 3-2 in the 6A playoffs under Randall Zimmerman.

Week-10 Game Preview
Lawrence vs SM North (@ Lawrence)
The Chesty Lions and Indians are no strangers to each other, either in regular season play or playoffs dating as far back as the 1941 season. Take note, that these two did not officially begin playing as league counterparts 10 years later in 1951. This game will be the schools 70th meeting of all-time.

Incredibly, these two have met in the State Playoffs as well. The Chesty Lions are 2-1 in all playoff games dating back to the 92-93 and 2000 seasons. Sam Brown is the only former Indians Head Coach to account for a playoff win against the Lions early on in Dirk Wedd's tenure.

The Chesty Lions own the series at 48W-18L-3T (48-18-3) in 69 prior meetings.

Blue Valley vs SM West (@ Blue Valley)
With two great Football programs meeting for only the third time, this will be a great game at the Blue Valley Tigers Field. Tim Callaghan's Vikings will have another shot at taking down a tough Tigers Football team. This season the EKL has played well against the Sunflower League, and with SM Northwest making a game of week-1, much improved fell short on the scoreboard.

In modern day Sunflower/EKL time 1980s to the 2015 season, these Football programs last met in 1986 (First round playoff loss), and again 23 years later in 2009 with a first round Win. This

The series is tied 1-1 in two prior meetings (86 & 09)

BV North vs Olathe North (@ BV North)
The 2015 East 6A First round bracket again has another rare meeting of 6A foes. These two, similar to SM East and BV Northwest, also meet up quite often during Basketball season and in other Spring team sports.

10 seasons ago, and a handful of former Head Coaches earlier, these two met in the Sub-State Final with the Eagles coming away with the win 13-6. Gene Weir had left after two historic three-peates for the Eagles and six, 6A State Titles. Assistant John McCall was in his first of two seasons as Head Coach, finishing 1-1 in 6A State Title games with the likes of Maurice Mack Jr, and James Franklin in his back pocket as Running Backs after Darren Sproles had graduated.

Look to see a shootout come your way, with both offenses wanting to outmatch each other. QB Joey Dolan of BV North has an incredible arm and a talented Receiver corp, while the Eagles will use their ground game to pound the ball up and down the field.

The Eagles are 3-0 all-time vs the Mustangs having only met in

SM East vs BV Northwest (@ SM North)
In which may seem like an odd match up in Football, these two teams/schools manage to meet frequently at times in all other 6A Varsity Sports throughout the school year at least one time or another.

The experienced Lancers, led by JR QB Luke Kaiser, and WR Sky Tate and others take on a young NW Huskies, that have struggled throughout the 2015 season. In a constantly tough EKL schedule, it can be hard to gain ground on the opponent some times.

Although two years in to the tenure of Randy Dreiling at ST Aquinas, the Huskies have been the unfortunate victims of the Flexbone offense. This week, they will see it again, and perhaps prepared to knock off a hungry Lancers Football program looking to return to the 6A State Title game from the 2014 season.

Ironically, these two teams have only met one other time in their Football history. During the week-10 season of the 1998 year, the Lancers traveled to BVDAC to face a very talented Steve Harms Huskies, that went on to finish with an 8-3 record, losing only to the Olathe North Eagles who went on to finish #1 in State that season and accomplishing a first of their two three-peats of State Title runs. The Lancers lost 38-0 in former Head Coach Glen Percy's only playoff game he ever coached.

Free State vs Wichita West (@ Free State)
For the first time since the 90's a new Sunflower opponent will face the Wichita West Pioneers. It was not since the Olathe North eagles faced, and won two consecutive State Titles in 1996, and 1997 at Lawrence Memorial Stadium capping off the first of the Eagles two three-peats.

These days, nearly 17 years later, the Pioneers find a very tough task on their hands facing a red hot Free State Firebirds. With six straight wins entering week-10, look for QB Bryce Tornaden to run the show with his arm, and powerful run game. With a strong Back in Sam Skwarlo, this could be a devastating combination all night long for the Pioneers.

Wichita West itself, closed out the season 5-4, and struggling to find itself consistency all season. Their two most notable games of play, are a week-5 blow out loss to City League Champions Wichita NW Grizzlies, and a week-9 loss to the 2013 State Champions Derby Panthers with a 2-1 District record.

Leavenworth vs Mill Valley (@ Mill Valley)
This will be the first time ever the Pioneers and Jaguars have met in playoff competition or regular season games all time.

The Jaguars, have nothing but high expectations to succeed in knocking off the Pioneers in this round one game. Leavenworth will need to find a way to strike first and move the ball up and down the field, against a very talented defense that has allowed only 12.6 PPA. Offensively, QB Drew Sachen and his line will not make many mistakes, where the Jaguars defense will make them pay.

Mill Valley's firepower too will be coming at all angles as well. WR Christian Jegen,  and QB Logan Koch will be names you will hear often throughout this playoff bracket should the Jaguars move on to the next round. Don't expect the Pioneers to lay down for anyone, they will battle to the final whistle.

SM South Win's #250 All-Time in History

Congrats to the SM South Raiders Football Team on Friday night.

The Raiders, in their 50th Football season won their 250th game in school history, and Head Coach Brett Oberzan, earning his first win against the SM Northwest Cougars.

Last spring, Brett Oberzan was named the 7th Head Coach in Raiders Football history succeeding (SM West Assistant Coach) Ryan Lonergan.

Brett Oberzan is the only SMSD #5 Football Coach within the history of the SMSD #512 to ever have his first win land on an anniversary number, as well as an anniversary school year on the same calendar season. Prior to his hiring in the spring, the forty-four current or former Head Coaches before him (of all five High School’s) have never accomplished such a feat in their first official win.

SMW Vikings Football and KC Royals Baseball

As the World Series has once again taken front seat to our great city, and KC-Metro area, enclosed is something we can share with the Royals of the 1985 season.

With our Royals playing in Game #5 of the 2015 World Series later tonight, it goes without saying, that our Sunflower League has shown well in the playoffs similar to the Royals season.

Digging in to the archives of the Kevin Booker - Sunflower Football Historical Works, the Royals, similar to our eight Northeast Johnson County, and Douglass County High School Football playoff teams share great success on the gridiron.

In modern day Sunflower Football, the 1985 season featured the SM West Vikings led by Harold Wambsgans (in his 5th year at the helm) and a collection of dominate Vikings Football players took to the old grass fields Friday nights in one of their best seasons ever played. While most of their home games were held at SM South that season, the Vikings found themselves on a path to the 6A State Title game vs the Dodge City Red Demons.

The Football Vikings finished the season 11-1 Overall, and 5-1 in league play. Prior to the Vikings winning the 6A State Title, our own Kansas City Royals won the 7th game of the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals 11-0, which was also a shutout similar to the Vikings over the Demons.

Here is the 1985 Schedule the Vikings faced en route to their 2nd of 3 State Titles that leaves them two behind SM North with 5 recognized KSHSAA State Football Titles within the SMSD #512.
